New beginnings

A new year and a new start for my corner of the web.

Welcome to my new website! It's been a long time coming, but it's about time I got rid of the outdated old site and got to tick one more thing off my todo list (well, move a card on my personal Kanban board, but that's another story).

For someone in the web industry it can be surprisingly difficult to get your own site online. Finding the time and motivation in-between building websites for others, to write more code and start something entirely from scratch can be a daunting task, but also an exciting way to push your limits and have fun with new tools.

At some points, I've felt almost like a hairdresser, cutting their own hair. Used to perfecting things with direction from others, but now having to look at things from an entirely new angle. Being in the position of essentially being your own client can make things surprisingly difficult, you know exactly what can change, and you're never going to say no to yourself, are you?

So I've come to the conclusion that the best way to go about this is to just get something up, and then iterate on it, and update it. A more lean and agile approach to a web project.

I've build this website using the fantastic DocPad, a 'next generation web architecture' built using Node.js and Express.js. I'm using this partly as an experiment and for the fun of learning something new, and also because it's a great tool. Check it out! I'm also using the Agile Patterns toolkit & methodology I've been building for front end development.

So welcome to the website! Hopefully I'll be able to write all the things I want to write about, and often. And if you, like me, have been thinking about putting something for a while, make the time to do it, because we built the web together to be able to do just this.
